In Ohio, and much of the nation, the poverty level continues to remain stagnant, and in some parts its actually rising. Despite this upsetting fact, the number of children without Ohio health insurance (Ubezpieczenie Olsztyn) is decreasing which is a positive trend that experts expect may continue. Specifically in Fairfield County in Ohio, children without health insurance decreased from 5.6% to 3.1% from 2010 to 2011 based on information from Benjamin Lankas article on LancasterEagleGazette.com. This encouraging number means the state is headed in the right direction as health care reform takes over. The state overall saw a more modest drop in the number of uninsured, but a drop nonetheless. Uninsured rates for children went from 6% to 5.8% based on data from the annual American Community Survey completed by the United States Census Bureau. There was only a slight increase in the amount of children with health insurance but considering that poverty levels increased slightly this is an important increase. In Fairfield County, the percent of families with children in poverty increased from 12% to 13.4% from 2010-2011. This is well within the margin of error but obviously, we never want to see poverty levels increase. There are multiple factors influencing the increase in insured children. The National Center for Children in Povertys Curtis Skinner pointed out that in general, insurance coverage is better for poor children than adults because they qualify for Childrens Health Insurance Programs and often times Medicaid. Its possible Ohio promoted eligibility factors more aggressively, allowing more children to obtain the health insurance coverage they need. In addition to this, more families may have qualified for the benefit because of lost jobs and lost wages due to the economic downturn. Skinner did not believe private health insurance companies were responsible for the increased coverage in children. Spokeswoman for the Ohio Childrens Hospital Association, Angela Krile, could not pinpoint exactly why insured numbers have increased. According to her, one in three children are enrolled in health insurance through Medicaid and that helps to inflate these numbers. She points out how this demonstrates the importance of Medicaid in Ohio. There has not been too many change in the program since 2010, but health insurance awareness has been on the rise with health care reform in the news daily. Regardless of what the reasons may be, having more children covered by health insurance is a good thing. It is critical for families as they deal with the stressors of raising children, especially if they are living at poverty level. Having health insurance is so important to ensure the best quality of care and a smoother health care system. Children who lack health insurance often end up waiting for necessary care and this can affect their overall health in major ways. The state of Ohio hopes to see continued increases in the number of children throughout their state that have health insurance. Not only does this mean the children have a better chance of receiving the care they need in a timely matter, but the state can more efficiently run their health care system as more and more people obtain coverage. Its the basis of health care reform that everyone should carry health insurance. Children often get lost in the shuffle when it comes to proper coverage, but Medicaid and other child programs work hard to ensure as many children as possible have access to top quality health care.
